Saint Anthony
Lisbon celebrates its municipal holiday on June 13th, Saint Anthony's Day (Saint Anthony: Lisbon, c. 1195 – Padua, 1231
Although the core festivities occur on that specific day and the preceding evening, the celebrations span the entire month of June. These events also commemorate Saint John and Saint Peter, collectively known as the 'Festival of Popular Saints’.
In June, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods—like Alfama, Mouraria, and Castelo—are decked out in colorful balloons, arches, and flowers. It’s a massive street party where everyone is welcome to dance, drink, and feast on grilled sardines, chouriço assado, and caldo verde. Keeping ancient summer solstice traditions alive, men also gift their partners pots of sweet basil topped with paper flowers and romantic poems.
The highlights of the religious calendar include the St. Anthony’s Weddings—a mass ceremony for couples facing financial hardship. On June 13th, the grand procession takes place, starting at St. Anthony’s Church. Built near the Lisbon Cathedral, this church stands on the legendary birthplace of the saint himself.
The absolute highlight of the festivities happens on the night of June 12th with the 'Popular Marches'. While the tradition began in the 18th century, it took its current shape in 1932. Locals from different Lisbon districts parade down Avenida da Liberdade in a friendly competition, showcasing dances and songs written for a specific city theme. The stunning costumes and lively choreography bring a burst of color and excitement, creating an unforgettable show.
