# Sé de Lisboa

 
Lisbon Cathedral is one of the "New 7 Wonders of Portugal".

The oldest church in Lisbon, built starting in 1147 during the reign of King Afonso Henriques, was distinguished in the Religion category. Also known as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maior, it is one of the city's most emblematic monuments, preserving centuries of history.

Designed by Master Roberto in the Romanesque style, it ended up undergoing several interventions throughout the centuries that adapted to the characteristics of each era, such as the Gothic cloister, with construction begun during the reign of King Dinis (1261-1325); the Mannerist-style sacristy (1649); or the revivalist restorations of the 20th century, carried out after the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 that destroyed part of the building.

It was in this church that Saint Anthony was baptized. The reliquary caskets containing the relics of Saint Vincent, patron saint of Lisbon, are displayed in the Cathedral Treasury. Its history is therefore deeply intertwined with that of the city.
