Under Our Feet – The Historic Pavements of Lisbon
Under Our Feet – The Historic Pavements of Lisbon is a proposal of the Museu de Lisboa to look at the ground on which we step on and the ground on which we stepped on until nowadays.
Learning and analyzing the pavements of a city as old as Lisbon means knowing the city itself. In this exhibition, the Museu de Lisboa addresses a rarely explored theme: the techniques, materials, forms, designs, and colors that have covered the ground in which we step on, from prehistory to the beginning of the twentieth century.
The pavement solutions of the city have been changing over time, sharpening men’s inventive capacity. In the diachronic analysis promoted by the exhibition, it is clear that many proposals have been rehearsed, tested and evaluated, while others have been adopted in a visibly casual way.
The exhibition shows that the solutions adopted translate experiments, formulas, tests and errors. One can say that examining the pavements that man has created and walked on, one can understand the history of a place and the history of the people who inhabited it better.
The goal of the exhibition is to draw attention to the ground we step on every day, to enjoy the patterns of the Portuguese pavement that skillful hands have made, in a tribute to all those who made it possible for us to walk through Lisbon for so many centuries.
Until September 24th on the west tower Torreão Poente at Praça do Comércio.
