Zagreb Art in Lisbon

Celebrating a 40 years friendship between the cities of Lisbon and Zagreb, the Museu Nacional dos Coches hosts two exhibitions that will introduce to the Portuguese audience the history of Zagreb.

On display until December 3rd, the exhibitions from the painter Vatroslav Kuliš, Fugas Centrípetas, and the photographers Marija Braut and Slavka Pavić, Zagred de Outro Ângulo, share a common designation: Zagreb Art in Lisbon.

These exhibitions and several other cultural events are the result of the cooperation between the Mayors of both cities. The beginning of this cooperation was celebrated with a concert by Zagreb’s Orchestra at the Festival ao Largo.

Both exhibitions aim to introduce Zagreb’s history through the photographers lens and the artistic expression of the painter.

Marija Braut (1929 - 2015) was one of the most prolific Croatian women photographers, who began her work on photography in the late 1960s but from 1972 she worked as a freelance artist, collaborating with several institutions museums, galleries and theaters.

Slavka Pavić (1927) arrived in Zagreb in 1946 where she immediately started to work on photography. In 1951, she became a member of Fotoklub Zagreb and began to exhibit her work, collaborating with her husband, the prominent photographer Milan Pavić.

Vatroslav Kuliš was born in 1951 and graduated in painting by the Academy of Fine Arts of Zagreb, in 1976. He is the author of several scenography’s and design works in Croatian theatres and various printed portfolios. He was also responsible for the graphic design and for the illustration of many books. His religious-themed works decorate several Croatian churches.
