The Seduction of Modernity
The Museu do Chiado presents a different look over its collection, in an exhibition curated by Maria de Aires Silveira.
By the end of the nineteenth century, Portuguese painters and sculptors were attracted with all that represented an escape from the old way of making art. It’s that attraction with disruption that is shown in “The Seduction of Modernity” a new exhibition at the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea.
The chronological markers on the collection are situated between 1850 and 1910, starting with the dissenting of Romanticism and proceeding through the final decades of the nineteenth century, as the concept of modernity came to be explored by the landscape painters and portraitists of Grupo do Leão.
This exhibition, in display until April 2018, highlights literature's importance as a primary influence on new artistic ideas in the mid-nineteenth century, introduced by a bold notion of modernity that ran counter to academicism and stood as a provocation against institutionalized taste.
